General Class Description
In this hands-on course, students will learn the fundamentals of photography while developing their own creative eye. Through guided exercises, real-world assignments, and constructive critiques, students will explore composition, lighting, perspective, and visual storytelling using either a smartphone or digital camera.
What Will Students Learn?
Throughout the course, students will work from a real-world creative brief, learning how professional photographers create compelling imagery for clients, brands, and organizations. Students will photograph people, places, objects, and everyday moments while discovering how thoughtful photography can communicate emotion, personality, and purpose.
What Will Students Leave With?
- Understand the fundamentals of photography and visual storytelling.
- Learn how to create compelling images with intention.
- Master composition techniques including the Rule of Thirds, framing, leading lines, symmetry, and depth.
- Understand natural and artificial lighting.
- Learn how perspective changes the story of an image.
- Develop confidence photographing people, objects, architecture, and everyday scenes.
- Understand basic camera settings and smartphone photography techniques.
- Learn introductory photo editing and color correction.
- Build a consistent photographic style.
- Develop confidence giving and receiving constructive critiques.
- Complete a polished photography portfolio.
