Creative Writing Event | “Stories Without a Script: Writing TTRPG Adventures” | Oct 8th, 2026 | 6:00pm

Many people have tried playing a TTRPG in some form, but running a game can seem daunting to newcomers. Writing an adventure may appear to be some strange magic available only to those touched by an arcane force. This workshop attempts to dispel the latter idea.

Writing a TTRPG adventure is very different from writing a short story or novel. The adventure writer or Game Master (GM) introduces the world, its challenges and many of its characters, known as nonplayer characters (NPCs). Everyone else at the table controls one of the main characters in the story, known as player characters (PCs). The GM does not control the PCs. In the best games, the GM and players create the story and world together, but that requires an approach very different from traditional story writing.

No gaming experience is required for this workshop. Following an introduction to TTRPGs, we will explore the components of adventures that encourage engagement, player choice and collaboration while avoiding common pitfalls that can drain the fun from a game. Using guided prompts, participants will have time to develop some of their own ideas for an adventure and then discuss those ideas and the writing process with the group.
