General Class Description

Flip-O-Rama is the world’s easiest animation method, which is a two-frame paper animation created by author Dave Pilkey in the Captain Underpants and Dog Man book series. All you need is a piece of paper and something to draw with! Use it to make memorable birthday, greeting, or thank you cards; make your friends laugh; or sketch out a basic animation loop before committing to something more involved. You will continue the process by making multi-page, animated flipbooks to entertain you, your friends, and whoever else is peeking over your shoulder!

What Will Students Learn?

Basics of animation, how to use a lightbox, and the importance of “don’t make it move unless you want it to”. Even just experimenting with flipbooks teaches animation basics like consistency (and/or Wigglevision), timing, simplicity in character design, and possibly squash-and-stretch for older/more motivated students.

What Will Students Leave With?

Several silly (or serious) flip-o-rama animations to show off, as well as Post-It flipbooks and a hand-made flipbook from paper/cardstock.
