Piece by Piece : Ceramics & Game Design

June 3 – July 29 | Ages 14+

***No Classes The Week Of June 29th – July 5th***

Class:

In this workshop, students design and create a fully playable board game using ceramic processes. Students combine art, design thinking, storytelling, and gameplay mechanics into one cohesive ceramic artwork.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Functional ceramics
  • Collaboration and systems thinking
  • Conceptual design (rules + form)
  • Craftsmanship and durability
  • Playability and user experience
  • Essential Learning Objectives

Students Will:

  • Design a game system with clear rules and objectives
  • Use slab construction to build a flat, stable ceramic board
  • Understand clay shrinkage and warping prevention
  • Apply surface decoration techniques (texture, carving, underglaze)
  • Evaluate their work through testing and critique

***(Students are required to follow the instructor’s curriculum. Only work produced from that curriculum will be fired.)***

What You’ll Leave With:

Students will leave with a fully playable clay board game and game pieces.

(Students will submit glazed works for final firing on the last class of the session. Students will be contacted, via email, once their pottery has finished firing and available for pick up on a later date)

Paper Pulp “Clay” Sculptures
Tuesday, 6:00 pm
July 13 | Ages 11-15

Class Description:

In this workshop, you will learn about the process of making paper pulp/paper clay and using it as an exciting medium to build three-dimensional objects. With its unique textural and moldable qualities, paper pulp sculptures are lightweight, eco friendly, and durable!

What You’ll Learn:

  • Learn how paper pulp becomes a sculptural medium
  • Explore form, texture, and structure
  • Build and finish a paper pulp “clay” sculpture
  • Practice patience, problem-solving, and craftsmanship

What You’ll Leave With:

Students will leave with a paper pulp bowl, vase, and/or a paper clay tile refill

Paper Collage Storyboarding Workshop
Monday, 6:00 pm
June 15 | Ages 7-10

Class Description:

Students will create a visual story using construction paper collage techniques. They will plan a beginning, middle, and end; design characters and settings; and assemble a storyboard using images instead of words (or with limited text).

What You’ll Learn:

  • Understand basic storytelling structure
  • Create characters and settings using collage
  • Learn cutting, layering, and gluing techniques
  • Organize ideas sequentially
  • Present and reflect on their visual stories

What You’ll Leave With:

Students will leave with the 3 to 4 Paper Collage Storyboards and a stronger understanding of what an art project is from start to finish.

Teen Wheel Throwing
Thursdays, 10:00am
July 9 – 30 | Ages 13-17

Class:

This four‑week introductory wheel‑throwing course gives teens a hands‑on, confidence‑building experience with clay. Students learn the fundamentals of centering, pulling walls, shaping forms, trimming, and glazing. The class emphasizes exploration, skill‑building, and creative problem‑solving while maintaining a supportive studio environment. By the end of the month, each student will complete several functional or decorative wheel‑thrown pieces.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Demonstrate foundational wheel‑throwing skills
  • Create functional or decorative
  • Understand trimming, surface design, and glazing
  • Gain confidence working independently on the wheel
  • Experience the full clay process from wet work to finished ceramic

***(Students are required to follow the instructor’s curriculum. Only work produced from that curriculum will be fired.)***

What You’ll Leave With:

Students will take home all wheel‑thrown pieces after glaze firing.
